ABOUT OUR FARM
Teas for Bees is a small, family-run ecological farm that produces a wide variety of delicious dried herbal teas, dried flowers, fresh flower bunches and potted plants.
Everything that we grow, from painted sage with calming white, pink, purple and blue bracts, delicate white Cosmos, bright orange tithonia to our many gloriously smelling mints, chamomile, lemon verbena, thymes, lavenders, sages, hyssops, catmints, bergamot, lemon balm and rosemaries.... they all have two prerequisites....
1: It must be useful to our wonderful pollinators and
2: It provides us with a beautiful crop to harvest.
We also grow potted herb and flower plants so that our customers can easily grow their own herbs and flowers for themselves and the pollinators.
We farm gently, allowing the soil to build up it's natural communities of bacteria, fungi and invertebrates by disturbing the structure of the soil as little as possible, adding mulch and compost over time to replenish the nutrients in the soil. We use organic seaweed fertiliser where plants require a boost for healthy growth and seed formation.
Many people are now collectively understanding the impacts of human activity on nature and the need to reconnect our fragmented natural ecosystems to benefit all types of wildlife is great. We are relearning, remembering and acquiring new knowledge to do this so the future is looking more positive.
We will lightly manage the natural wild flora growing around us to set aside areas for egg laying butterflies, ladybirds and hoverflies, while cultivating many carefully selected herbs and flowers on our beds and flowering shrubs and trees in every suitable position on our plot, to benefit pollinators with varied feeding styles; honey bees, bumble bees, beetles including ladybirds, moths, butterflies, ants, solitary bees, wasps and flies including wonderful hoverflies.
All of these pollinators play a vital role in the survival of our ecosystem through soil health, fertilisation of native flora, edible wild plants (as well as the production of our healthy crops) and of course are an important food source for other animals such as; dragonflies, centipedes, spiders, frogs, toads, mice, lizards, hedgehogs, bats, birds and badgers and more!
We will be selling our flowers and herbs direct to customers at local markets and through small local independent shops as well as to online customers.
We want to draw on our background and experience in environmental science and nature-based education to support people who'd like to grow plants to benefit their garden insects. Growing certain plants to attract pollinators can create a beautiful natural balance in your garden, to help keep any one particular 'muncher' from becoming overwhelming!
